How alcohol affects weight loss
- Your body burns alcohol first. While it's clearing alcohol, fat burning is put on hold for a few hours.
- It lowers your guard. Most of the damage comes from the late-night food that follows, not the drinks alone.
- Mixers matter. A spirit with regular cola has nearly twice the calories of the same spirit with soda water or a diet mixer.
- It disturbs sleep, and poor sleep makes you hungrier the next day.
Low-risk drinking advice is different in each country:
- United States: no more than 2 drinks a day for men and 1 for women.
- United Kingdom: no more than 14 units a week, spread over 3 or more days.
- Canada: 2 standard drinks or fewer a week keeps risk low.
- Australia: no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 on any one day.
- New Zealand: no more than 10 standard drinks a week for women and 15 for men, with at least 2 alcohol-free days.
Less is better for your health and your waistline.
Alcohol calorie questions
How many calories are in a beer?
A regular 330 ml beer has about 140 calories, a light beer about 100, and a strong IPA can pass 175. Pints (568 ml) have roughly 70% more.
Which alcohol has the fewest calories?
A single shot of a plain spirit with soda water or a diet mixer, around 100 calories, or a hard seltzer, are the lowest common choices. Dry wine and light beer come next.
Does alcohol turn into fat?
Not directly. But while your body clears alcohol it stops burning fat, and the calories you eat alongside drinks are more likely to be stored.
Can I drink alcohol and still lose weight?
Yes, if the drinks fit inside your calorie target. Two or three lower-calorie drinks a week is manageable. Nightly drinking makes a deficit much harder.
How many carbs are in wine and spirits?
Plain spirits have zero carbs. Dry wine has 3 to 4 g per glass, beer 6 to 15 g, and sweet cocktails can have 30 g or more.
