How Many Calories in a Roti?

A medium whole wheat roti has about 120 calories. That number moves a lot with size, flour and whether it gets a brush of ghee, so here's what you're really eating with every piece.

Calories in roti compared with paratha, naan and puri on a plate

Calories in one roti

A typical home roti weighs around 40 g once cooked. Made from whole wheat atta with no oil, it has roughly:

Small, thin rotis of 30 g are closer to 90 calories. Big, thick ones from a tandoor can weigh 60 g or more and pass 180.

Ghee is where the calories hide

A teaspoon of ghee is about 45 calories. Two rotis with ghee at every meal adds up to roughly 270 calories a day from ghee alone, close to two extra rotis. If you're trying to lose weight, keep the ghee for one meal or use a light brush instead of a spoon.

How many rotis should you eat a day?

There's no single right number. It depends on your daily calorie target and what else is on your plate. As a rough guide for someone trying to lose weight:

Fill the rest of the plate with daal, vegetables, salad and a protein like chicken, eggs or paneer. That keeps you full without piling on bread. To find your own number, start with your daily target from the calorie calculator.

Is roti better than rice?

Calorie for calorie they're close. One roti and about two-thirds of a cup of cooked rice are both around 120 to 130 calories. Whole wheat roti has more fiber and a little more protein, which helps you feel full. White rice is easier to overeat because it goes down fast. Either can fit a healthy diet if you watch the portion.
